Being a Teacher

I started teaching after graduation. I was excited because i was going to handle college students. I’ve had experiences teaching before they gave me the job so i was quite confident that would be able to handle students who would be my age or younger or even older.

I enjoy teaching. The only comment of my past students is that i dictate notes… i seldom write on the chalkboard (because of my asthma). But i believe that by dictating to them our lesson, i am teaching them to listen and not to be spoon fed. Students today are very dependent on their teachers. they expect that everything they need to know will be given by the teachers… BUT NO! I believe that learning comes from the initiative of a person to learn… when you want to know more about something, then you have to make it a point to research or look for other sources of the bits of information that you are looking for…

i often tell my students to  search the internet or look for books that will help them in our lessons so that they could join in the discussion and i will also learn from them. Learning is a give and take process seen in different angles. For example: one has to sacrifice time to inorder to read books, to be able to share ideas, one must be a wide reader in order for him or her to defend his/her ideas…

Being a teacher requires time to prepare for lectures and patience to teach. Sometimes even when i see students chatting and laughing, i just catch their attention and still proceed with my lecture (i guess that’s why some are not afraid to make noise)… i do not shout at noisy students–i just say i’ll give them a quiz it they don’t keep quiet. hehehe (it’s effective courtesy of mng liz)

What makes me whole as a teacher is that when i see my students who are trying to be on their own in this world… i see their smiles and it makes my heart leap… years are so fast. i was witnessed the three 1st batches of DevCom in BSU… i just hope they are all doing well and good.

sigh…

That’s quite true. you have to have ample amount of patience. My experience is similar with yours. Now, I am handling a discussion class in Economics 11 here at UP Diliman. Your absolutely right when you said it requires time to prepare. However, I believe that in due time, you will no longer do so. Mastery of your craft is what I mean.=) Anyways, good luck to your chosen career. Kudos!
